BBC's 'A New Year at Kew'
Episode 1
Landmarks and Discoveries
Alpine House
The stunning new glasshouse is opened by Michael Palin after a year
in construction: its unique design cools the air so that the
alpine plants can flower at their best.
Moving
the palm
Dave Cooke is attempting to move a large palm that has outgrown its position
in the Temperate House. Dave looks at archive photos of Charles Raffill
who moved a similar specimen in 1938.
Manure
Kew has one of the biggest compost heaps in Britain, and a highly prized ingredient
is horse manure. Dave Barnes makes a collection at the Royal Artillery stables.
Fungus
A member of the public has sent a fungus to Peter Roberts in Kew's Mycology
Department. The hope is that it's a pepperpot fungus, thought to be extinct
since 1880.
