Kew Gardens in autumn
Seasons and flowering times, especially in spring, can vary
by up to three weeks so the periods below are only approximate.
September and October and nowadays, the seasons are so variable,
probably well into November, see the poetic season of 'mists and
mellow fruitfulness'.
Autumn colour, as deciduous trees shut down their leaf activity,
is at its most striking. Berries ripen and some trees start their
bark colour changes too.
The Woodland Glade brings still more colour with autumn crocuses,
hardy cyclamens and belladonna lilies, while the Grass Garden never
ceases to fascinate with its huge variety of plants, ranging from
highly decorative ornamental grasses to the most useful cereal crops.
Some of the hollies along the Holly Walk are over 135 years old.
It's the best collection of mature hollies in Europe and stretches
along what was once Richmond's Love Lane. Spindle trees are grown
for the spectacular colours of their autumn fruits, in which the
seeds are just as brightly coloured.
