Seasons at Kew Gardens and Wakehurst Place

As the seasons change, so does the very nature of both Kew Gardens and Wakehurst Place. In the grounds and in the glasshouses, thousands of plants progress through their annual cycles, flowering, fruiting, growing, resting. From bluebells to autumn colour; from native wildflowers to exotic orchids, there are plants to be seen at their glorious best all year long.

Please note that flowerings can vary by some three to four weeks, depending on climatic conditions. Check the News pages to see what's at its best and where it is.

Kew Gardens

DaffodilsSpring

Literally millions of spring bulbs; a bluebell wood; walks through trees in blossom; wonderful shows of rhododendrons and azaleas; spring bedding displays - it's now that Kew comes to life.

Outside in the Gardens and inside the glasshouses, the sights and scents of summer when Kew is in full bloom crowd visitors' memories with unmitigated pleasure.

RhusAutumn

With colour coming to leaves, to bark and to ripening berries; with ornamental grasses at their best; and with Europe's finest collection of mature hollies; some say autumn is Kew at its best.

DaffodilsWinter

There's more to see in winter than many people think. Christmas roses, snowdrops and winter-flowering clematis; wintersweet and witch hazels with their heady scents - and tropic warmth in the glasshouses.

Wakehurst Place

CrocusSpring

Spring bulbs and wildflowers in woodland settings; bright bedding in walled gardens; magnolias and pieris putting on their shows, and rhododendrons almost everywhere - Wakehurst Place grows more glorious throughout spring.

SunflowerSummer

There's colour everywhere, from pastel cottage colours, through Mediterranean themes and mixed herbaceous plantings, to dramatic slashes of colour from Japan. Add native wildflowers and orchids and summer has arrived.

Now is when Wakehurst's trees show their magic, with glowing berries and a riot of colourful foliage. The herbaceous borders last well and sculptural seed heads add their drama.

HollyWinter

The dogwoods and willows, heathers and cyclamens make the Winter Garden a 'must', as are Westwood Valley with its highly-perfumed daphnes and Bethlehem Wood's National Collection of glorious birches.
